Albuquerque, N.M. – Communities near burn scars in northern and southern New Mexico face a heightened risk of flooding through midnight Friday as monsoonal thunderstorms spread across the state. The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Watch for the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon and Ruidoso burn scar areas, warning of rapid runoff, impassable roads, and localized debris flows.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, rainfall rates could reach up to one inch per hour in storms developing Friday afternoon and evening. The flood watch extends until midnight for Hermit’s Peak and Calf Canyon, and until 3 a.m. Saturday for the Ruidoso burn scar region.
Officials warn flooding could develop quickly in arroyos, creeks, and low-lying areas, particularly near Forest Service roads, rural highways, and mountain communities. Drivers are urged not to attempt to cross flooded roads, as water levels may rise suddenly. Residents near vulnerable slopes are also advised to keep emergency kits ready and monitor alerts closely.
The flash flood risk will continue into the weekend as more monsoonal moisture fuels storms statewide. Additional watches and warnings are possible if rainfall persists.
