ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – An urgent Freeze Warning is in effect for the Albuquerque Metro Area and Upper Tularosa Valley from 1 a.m. until 9 a.m. MDT Thursday, as temperatures are forecast to fall to around 28 degrees in the coldest valley spots. The National Weather Service in Albuquerque cautions that subfreezing temperatures could kill sensitive vegetation and damage unprotected outdoor plumbing across central New Mexico.
According to the National Weather Service, the sharp drop in temperature will occur under clear skies and light winds as a high-pressure ridge settles over the state. The coldest readings are expected along the Rio Grande, where calm conditions will allow cold air to pool overnight. Areas in the Northeast Heights may stay just above freezing but still face light frost potential.
Residents across Albuquerque, Belen, Socorro, and Carrizozo are urged to protect plants, outdoor spigots, and irrigation systems before bedtime. Pets should be brought indoors, and outdoor pipes should be wrapped or drained to prevent bursting. Gardeners and homeowners are also encouraged to cover tender vegetation with breathable fabric or cloth.
According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, drivers should watch for patchy frost on bridges and shaded roads along I-25, I-40, and U.S. 380, especially during the early morning commute. Early risers should allow extra time for defrosting windshields and expect a crisp start before sunshine returns by midmorning.
Warmer afternoons return Friday into the weekend, but another cool front early next week could bring renewed frost chances to central valleys and higher elevations.
