Albuquerque, NM – A dangerous stretch of heat will peak Thursday across central New Mexico, with highs in Albuquerque expected to reach 99°F under mostly sunny skies. The extreme heat will make outdoor activities risky during the afternoon and early evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service, calm conditions overnight will give way to building heat Thursday morning, with temperatures climbing rapidly after 10 a.m. Residents in Bernalillo County and surrounding areas should limit strenuous outdoor activity, drink plenty of water, and seek shade when possible. Heat-sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and outdoor workers, are especially vulnerable.
While Wednesday will already be hot with highs near 97°F, Thursday’s heat is expected to be the most intense of the week before scattered thunderstorms bring a slight cooldown Friday. Roads and playground surfaces will become dangerously hot by midday, increasing the risk of burns for pets and children.
The National Weather Service advises keeping pets indoors during peak heat and checking on neighbors who may be at risk. Heat alerts remain in effect until Thursday night, with a noticeable drop in temperatures expected by Friday evening.
