Albuquerque, New Mexico – Drivers along I-25 from Ribera to Raton could face sudden crosswinds topping 45 mph by Tuesday afternoon, creating dangerous travel conditions for high-profile vehicles and increasing the risk of rapid fire spread across northeast New Mexico.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, strong west to southwest winds combined with humidity levels dropping as low as 8 to 15 percent will elevate fire danger Monday and Tuesday. The most intense wind speeds are expected during the afternoon hours, especially across the Northeast Highlands and eastern plains.

Across central and western New Mexico, temperatures are climbing well above seasonal averages. Albuquerque is expected to approach 79 degrees Monday, potentially challenging long-standing records. Farmington could reach the lower 70s, while Santa Fe and Los Alamos rise into the low 70s. The warmth, paired with dry vegetation, creates a volatile setup for fast-moving grass fires.

Eastern New Mexico, including Las Vegas, Tucumcari and Clines Corners near I-40, will likely experience the strongest gusts Tuesday. Blowing dust may reduce visibility on stretches of I-40 and U.S. 84, particularly in open rural areas. Fire officials warn that any spark could spread quickly under these conditions.

Residents should avoid outdoor burning, secure loose objects and delay towing or travel with campers during peak wind hours. Keep vehicles off dry grass and properly discard cigarettes to prevent accidental ignitions.

Elevated fire weather conditions are expected to persist through Tuesday, with additional concerns returning Thursday in the Rio Grande Valley and eastern parts of the state. Further advisories may be issued as wind speeds and humidity trends are refined.
