Albuquerque, NM – Extreme heat and wildfire risk will grip New Mexico through Thursday as temperatures soar into the mid-90s and low 100s, threatening to break records across the state. According to the National Weather Service, the hottest readings are expected along the Rio Grande Valley from Albuquerque to Socorro, with severe heat peaking Wednesday and Thursday.

Cities including Santa Fe, Farmington, and Tucumcari are forecast to see dangerous highs that will elevate the risk of heat-related illness, especially during the afternoon. On Sunday, residents in eastern New Mexico—from Tucumcari to Clovis—should prepare for isolated severe storms between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Damaging winds and large hail remain possible if storms develop.

Meanwhile, single-digit humidity and gusty afternoon winds will drive a high risk for wildfires across central and western areas, with fire weather warnings in effect. Firefighters urge everyone to avoid open flames, keep vehicles off dry grass, and never discard cigarettes outdoors. Hydrate frequently, wear sunscreen, and limit outdoor activity during peak heat, especially for children and pets.

The combination of extreme heat, dry air, and potential storms means all New Mexicans should stay weather-aware and expect additional advisories through midweek.
