Albuquerque, NM – Residents across New Mexico are being advised to prepare for widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall beginning Friday, September 26, and lasting through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, scattered to numerous storms are expected, with rainfall totals ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 inches for much of the state. However, isolated areas could see up to 2–3 inches of rain, raising concerns for flash flooding.
Forecasters highlighted that burn scar regions, particularly near Ruidoso, face the highest flood risks. Moderate to heavy runoff could affect normally dry arroyos and low water crossings, making some roads impassable. The heaviest rain is anticipated during afternoon and evening hours through the weekend.
The Weather Prediction Center has issued a slight risk of excessive rainfall for much of central New Mexico on Saturday and Sunday, covering Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Socorro, and Ruidoso. Marginal risk zones extend further north and west, including Gallup and Farmington.
Temperatures are expected to cool slightly with the storm activity, holding in the 70s for most areas. Conditions are forecast to improve Monday, with precipitation chances dropping significantly.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways and remain alert for flash flood warnings. The NWS reminded drivers: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
