Albuquerque, NM – An intense heatwave is expected to grip New Mexico from the end of this week into early next week, with temperatures forecasted to soar into the upper 90s and even reach the low 100s in some areas. This surge in temperatures is anticipated to bring a moderate to high risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly in regions marked in orange and red on the National Weather Service’s heat risk map.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, the most affected areas will include cities like Albuquerque, Roswell, and Las Cruces. The combination of prolonged heat and high overnight temperatures will increase the likelihood of heat stress, especially for those without effective cooling or adequate hydration. Residents are urged to take precautions by staying indoors during peak heat hours, hydrating frequently, and checking on vulnerable individuals.
The forecast predicts daily highs will hover around 95-100°F across much of New Mexico, with the highest temperatures expected on Friday and Saturday. As the heatwave continues into next week, overnight lows will remain in the mid-70s, offering little relief. The heat risk is particularly high for outdoor workers, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. A few records may even be broken as temperatures peak.
