Albuquerque, New Mexico – Temperatures are set to surge across New Mexico by Friday afternoon, with highs climbing 10 to 20 degrees above normal and increasing fire weather concerns across central and southern areas.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, there is an 80 to 90 percent probability of above-normal temperatures statewide through early next week. The strongest heat signal centers on Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Roswell, and surrounding areas, where dry air and gusty winds may elevate wildfire risk.
Albuquerque is expected to reach the mid to upper 80s by Saturday, while southern مناطق including Las Cruces could push into the low 90s. Even higher elevations such as Santa Fe may climb into the upper 70s, well above seasonal averages, accelerating snowmelt in nearby mountains and increasing runoff into streams.
The broader pattern stretches across Arizona, Colorado, and Texas, forming a large heat dome across the Southwest and southern Plains. At the same time, isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms may develop over eastern New Mexico, especially along the Texas border, bringing brief lightning and localized downpours.
Residents should avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items in gusty winds, and stay hydrated during peak afternoon heat between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. The warming trend will persist through the weekend into early next week, with additional advisories possible as conditions intensify.
