New Mexico – Dust lifts off the desert floor and whips across roadways this morning as strong winds intensify across Albuquerque. Drivers along I-25 and I-40 are already feeling sudden gusts that push vehicles sideways, especially in open stretches.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a High Wind Warning remains in effect through the evening, with sustained east winds between 35 and 45 mph and gusts reaching up to 60 mph . These winds may bring blowing dust, reducing visibility at times.
Across the metro, including Rio Rancho and Bernalillo, unsecured objects can easily become airborne. Tree limbs may snap, and isolated power outages are possible. High-profile vehicles, including trucks and SUVs, should use extra caution, especially near canyon gaps and along elevated roadways.
Blowing dust may become more widespread by midday, particularly east of the city near the Manzano Mountains. Visibility could drop quickly in localized areas. Plan extra travel time and avoid unnecessary trips during peak wind periods.
Conditions improve later tonight as winds gradually ease. The weekend brings a much calmer pattern, with sunshine and highs climbing into the mid-70s Saturday and low 80s Sunday.
By Monday, warm and dry conditions continue with highs near 80 degrees. A slight chance of showers returns by Tuesday into Wednesday, signaling a shift toward a more active spring pattern.
