Albuquerque, NM – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the northern mountains of New Mexico, warning of snow, strong winds, and challenging travel conditions beginning early Sunday.
According to the NWS, snow will develop after 2 a.m. Sunday and continue through midnight, with 3 to 8 inches of accumulation expected above 8,500 feet and totals approaching 10 inches on the highest peaks. Lower elevations could see 0.1 to 0.4 inches of rain, with heavier pockets possible in eastern areas.
Meanwhile, east winds of 30 to 40 mph are forecast to sweep through canyons and gaps around Albuquerque overnight, producing strong crosswinds along portions of I-25. The weather service cautions that lightweight and unsecured objects may blow around, and motorists should use extra care, especially in high-profile vehicles.
Forecasters say travel may become very difficult across mountain passes, urging drivers to slow down and use caution if venturing into affected areas. The storm system is expected to taper off late Sunday as drier conditions return statewide.
