Albuquerque, NM – A sharp shift in weather is unfolding across New Mexico today, with strong winds and the season’s first freeze expected within 24 hours, according to the US National Weather Service Albuquerque.
Forecasters say wind gusts could reach 60 mph through the early afternoon, especially along and east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and across the Central Highlands. Locations such as Las Vegas, Clines Corners, and Mosquero may experience blowing dust and hazardous crosswinds along I-40.
By tonight, temperatures are forecast to plunge below freezing across the Northeast and Central Highlands as clear skies and calm winds develop. The coldest readings, between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. Tuesday, could dip into the upper 20s to low 30s in areas including Harding, San Miguel, and Torrance counties.
The freeze will likely end the growing season for many communities in northern and eastern New Mexico. Residents should cover or bring in sensitive plants, and ensure pets and livestock have shelter and unfrozen water overnight.
Despite the cold start Tuesday, forecasters expect milder afternoons later this week with highs returning to the 70s statewide by Wednesday.
