Calgary, AB – A late-March cold snap is hitting southern and central Alberta, with Calgary leading the region in freezing rain and flurry risks through Friday morning. Travel across the province may be impacted by slick roads and reduced visibility.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, Calgary faces a 60 percent chance of rain showers turning to snow flurries Thursday evening. Wind gusts could reach 40 km/h, driving wind chills as low as -11°C overnight. Friday remains snowy with daytime highs near -3°C and continued icy conditions.
In Edmonton and surrounding areas, temperatures will stay below freezing with periods of snow expected into Friday afternoon. Red Deer can also anticipate snowfall accumulation and similar wind chill levels, especially during the overnight hours.
By Saturday, many parts of Alberta, including Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, will remain under cloud cover, with lows dipping to -12°C in some areas. Sunshine and warming trends are forecast to begin Sunday, with Calgary reaching a high of 4°C and Edmonton following suit early next week.
Residents across Alberta are advised to slow down on highways, keep winter kits in vehicles, and watch for changing conditions as this brief system moves through.
