Edmonton, Alberta – A rare late-night earthquake shook parts of central Alberta Wednesday, with tremors reported just north of Edmonton shortly before midnight.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck about 7 kilometers north of Bon Accord at 11:27 p.m. Wednesday night. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of approximately 5 kilometers, increasing the likelihood that shaking was felt across nearby communities.

Residents in areas including Edmonton, St. Albert, and Fort Saskatchewan may have experienced brief but noticeable shaking, especially in upper floors and quieter overnight conditions. The event registered a moderate intensity level, capable of rattling windows and light fixtures but typically not causing significant structural damage.

Earthquakes of this size are uncommon in Alberta, where seismic activity is relatively low compared to western coastal regions. However, small to moderate quakes do occur occasionally, often linked to natural fault movement or regional geological stress.

No immediate reports of damage or injuries have been confirmed. Authorities continue monitoring for aftershocks, though none have been reported so far.
