Albany, NY – Lake effect snow, gusty winds, and plunging temperatures are gripping much of eastern New York and western New England through Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Albany.
Forecasters report wind gusts between 25 and 40 mph across most of the Capital Region today, with Berkshire and Litchfield counties under Wind Advisories for stronger gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph. Combined with low temperatures dipping into the teens, wind chills will feel near or below zero at times, particularly during the overnight hours into the weekend.
According to the latest NWS snowfall map, southern Herkimer County could see 3–6 inches of accumulation through Friday morning due to persistent lake effect snow bands, while areas outside the Mohawk Valley may only receive a trace to 2 inches.
Residents are urged to dress for extreme cold, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors, as frostbite can occur rapidly in these conditions. The NWS also advises bringing pets indoors and preparing for slick roadways and reduced visibility in snow-prone areas.
