Albany, N.Y. – Snow will begin coating roads across the Capital Region by 1 p.m. Sunday, with up to 7 inches expected and wind gusts reaching 35 mph in time to disrupt the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory runs from 1 p.m. Sunday through 7 p.m. Monday for eastern Albany, eastern Schenectady, southern Saratoga and western Rensselaer counties. Forecasters call for total accumulations between 3 and 7 inches, with higher amounts likely south of Albany toward the mid-Hudson Valley. Gusty winds will blow snow across roadways and lower visibility at times.
Interstates 87 and 90, along with Route 7 and the Dunn Memorial Bridge between Albany and Rensselaer, could become slick Sunday evening. Snow-covered stretches are likely in Troy, Schenectady, Clifton Park, Ballston Spa and Rotterdam, especially on bridges and overpasses.
The heaviest snowfall is expected Sunday night into early Monday, directly impacting the morning commute and possibly lingering into the evening drive. Reduced visibility from blowing snow could create sudden slowdowns on the Northway and I-787 corridor.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra following distance and prepare for changing road conditions. Advisories remain in effect until 7 p.m. Monday, and additional updates may be issued as snowfall rates increase Sunday night.
