Albany, NY – The early December chill tightens its grip across eastern New York today, with bright skies masking what’s coming next — a midweek snow-and-rain event that could complicate travel across the Capital Region. Temperatures start near 20°F this morning before climbing only into the low 20s, making for a cold, dry setup ahead of the next round of precipitation.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, clouds will increase Tuesday, followed by a 40% chance of snow late in the day and continuing through Tuesday night. A light accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is possible before the snow transitions to a wintry mix and rain on Wednesday as warmer air briefly pushes north. Highs on Wednesday near 38°F may cause slick roads and poor visibility, especially for morning commuters along I-87, I-88, and Route 9.
By Wednesday night, lingering flurries taper off as temperatures drop back into the 20s, setting up a cold but calmer Thursday with highs near 32°F. Friday could bring another quick snow chance before sunny but frigid weather dominates the weekend — highs only in the mid-20s by Sunday.
Long-range models show Arctic air building across the Great Lakes from December 11–17, signaling the coldest stretch of the season may be on the way.
Keep an eye on shaded roads and bridges for refreezing Wednesday night — a common December hazard that can turn wet pavement into black ice.
