Albany, NY – The US National Weather Service in Albany warns that a powerful low-pressure system and cold front will bring damaging winds and isolated severe thunderstorms to eastern New York and western New England from Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday morning.
A High Wind Watch is in effect for areas including the Mohawk Valley, Upper Hudson Valley, eastern Catskills, Berkshires, and southern Vermont, where winds of 25–35 mph and gusts up to 65 mph are possible. Meanwhile, a Wind Advisory covers northern counties such as Herkimer, Hamilton, and Warren, with gusts up to 55 mph expected.
Forecasters say convective showers associated with the cold front may produce severe-level wind gusts even without lightning, meaning some areas could see severe thunderstorm warnings issued solely for wind damage potential.
The weather service urges residents to secure outdoor items, as strong gusts could down trees and power lines, leading to scattered outages and travel difficulties. Conditions should begin improving by Thursday afternoon as the system moves east.
