Albany, N.Y. – Thunderstorms moving through eastern New York and western New England Sunday could bring damaging winds and dangerous conditions until 8 p.m. as a cold front advances across the region. The National Weather Service says isolated severe storms are possible, with the Capital Region and mid-Hudson Valley most at risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, the main hazard will be gusty winds capable of downing trees and power lines. Heavy rain and frequent lightning are also possible, creating travel headaches and potential power outages. The greatest concern spans from Albany and Schenectady into the Catskills, Taconic Range, and Berkshires.
Outdoor events and boaters on area lakes should use extra caution. Officials advise moving indoors at the first sign of thunder and securing outdoor items that could be blown around.
The storm threat is expected to taper off after sunset, but unsettled weather may linger into early next week. Additional watches or warnings could be issued if storm activity intensifies.
