Albany, N.Y. – Dangerous heat will grip eastern New York through Wednesday, with humidity pushing “feels like” temperatures into the mid-90s before storms move in. Afternoon highs in Albany, Amsterdam, Kingston, and Poughkeepsie will peak between 94°F and 97°F, driving a high heat index that could affect outdoor workers, athletes, and anyone without air conditioning.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, humidity levels will increase Tuesday and peak Wednesday ahead of a cold front. The front will bring rising rain and thunderstorm chances Wednesday afternoon, with precipitation probabilities climbing as high as 73% in Herkimer and 65% in Cobleskill, Gloversville, and Glens Falls by early evening.

Heat precautions are advised: limit strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Thunderstorms late Wednesday could bring heavy downpours and brief gusty winds, making travel hazardous on the Thruway and other major routes.

Relief arrives Thursday with cooler highs in the 80s, though scattered showers may persist. The National Weather Service says more advisories could follow if storms intensify.
