Albany, NY – Residents across eastern New York are being urged to secure Halloween decorations and outdoor items as gusty winds are expected to ramp up through tonight and continue into Friday.
According to the US National Weather Service Albany, east-southeast winds will strengthen throughout Thursday, with a 30–70% chance of gusts exceeding 40 mph across the Taconics and Berkshires overnight. By Friday, winds will shift to the west-northwest, expanding the risk zone to include the Mohawk Valley, Capital District, Catskills, and higher terrain east of the Hudson Valley, where the likelihood of 40+ mph gusts rises to 30–80%.
Meteorologists caution that unsecured decorations and outdoor items could become projectiles. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should also be prepared for difficult travel conditions, particularly on elevated roadways and open stretches.
Forecast maps show the highest wind probabilities near Pittsfield (54–58%), Albany (40%), and Syracuse (50%), with strong gusts likely through Friday night before tapering early Saturday.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and take precautions as the system moves through the region.
