ALBANY, N.Y. – Low clouds drift in from the Hudson Valley this morning, a soft gray curtain before an active stretch of fall weather begins. Warm air surges north under a strengthening south wind, and by late tonight, rain will drum across rooftops from Rensselaer to Saratoga Springs. Monday’s commute could be a wet one, with gusts near 30 mph making travel tricky along I-87 and Route 7.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop late Sunday night and continue into Monday morning. The heaviest rain is expected between 4 a.m. and midday, when small streams may briefly rise, and wind gusts could scatter loose leaves and debris across roads. Power flickers or brief outages are possible where stronger bursts of wind line up with thunderstorms.

Behind the front, temperatures will dip sharply — from the mid-60s Monday to the low-40s by Tuesday night. The air turns brisk and clean, with a mix of clouds and sun returning midweek. Wednesday’s highs will hover near 60°F before cooler nights push some inland valleys toward the upper 30s. If skies clear fully later in the week, the region could see its first patchy frost of the season.

As fall deepens, this week’s weather offers both sides of the season: a rainy start and crisp finish. Homeowners should clear drains, secure outdoor furniture, and prepare for cooler mornings ahead. After Monday’s rain, Upstate settles back into the golden calm of late October.
