Albany, N.Y. – Dry conditions and gusty winds will combine to create an elevated fire danger across much of eastern New York and southern Vermont on Thursday, raising the risk of fast-moving wildfires.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, southerly winds will strengthen to 10 to 15 mph in southern Vermont and 25 to 35 mph in parts of the Hudson Valley. Relative humidity values between 35 and 40 percent will make vegetation more prone to ignition, especially in areas already facing moderate drought.

Communities at higher risk include Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Bennington, Rutland, and Poughkeepsie. Officials caution that any spark — from machinery, discarded cigarettes, or outdoor burning — could quickly spread out of control under Thursday’s conditions.

The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation both advise residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor burning and remain alert for fire restrictions.

Relief is expected Thursday night, when widespread rainfall is likely to reduce the fire threat heading into the weekend. Until then, residents are urged to stay vigilant.
