Albany, New York – Strong and gusty winds are expected to develop across eastern New York later this morning and continue through the afternoon and early evening, creating potential travel and safety concerns.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, wind gusts of 30 to 40 miles per hour are expected at times as winds increase from the south to southwest late this morning. As a cold front moves through the region this evening, winds are forecast to shift to the west, with gusts remaining in the same 30 to 40 mph range before gradually diminishing overnight.
Forecasters said the strongest winds are most likely from late morning through early evening, with higher gusts possible at higher elevations. Breezy to windy conditions are expected across eastern New York and western New England, including the Capital Region.
The National Weather Service advised residents to secure loose outdoor items, such as trash cans and decorations, which could be blown around by strong gusts. Drivers of high-profile vehicles may experience difficult travel conditions, particularly on exposed roadways, bridges, and overpasses.
While widespread power outages are not anticipated, isolated issues could occur if tree limbs are blown down. Motorists are urged to remain alert for falling debris, especially during peak wind periods.
Winds are expected to diminish quickly after midnight as the cold front exits the region and pressure gradients relax. No significant precipitation or severe weather threats were highlighted with this system.
Commuters, students, and daytime workers should plan for blustery conditions throughout Friday, particularly during the afternoon commute. Maintaining safe following distances and keeping both hands on the wheel are recommended while driving in strong winds.
Additional updates will be issued by the National Weather Service as conditions evolve through the day
