Albany, N.Y. – Residents across eastern New York should prepare for strong thunderstorms this afternoon into tonight, with the greatest threat stretching from the Mohawk Valley through the southern Adirondacks. Forecasters warn of damaging wind gusts, large hail, and heavy downpours that could lead to ponding on roads and scattered power outages.

According to the National Weather Service office in Albany, a cold front moving through the state will fuel severe weather development from Sunday afternoon through late evening. A marginal risk for severe storms has been issued, with the potential for hail up to one inch in diameter, winds over 50 mph, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.

Communities including Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, Amsterdam, and Schenectady may see storm cells capable of producing sudden bursts of wind and rain. Farther south, Poughkeepsie and Hudson could also experience strong storms during the evening commute. Drivers are urged to reduce speed during downpours and avoid flooded roadways.

Emergency officials advise charging devices, securing outdoor items, and staying indoors when thunder is heard. The threat of storms will taper off overnight, but additional updates may follow if conditions intensify.
