Albany, NY – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect this afternoon and evening across portions of eastern and upstate New York, where freezing rain is expected to create hazardous travel conditions. The advisory extends through 1 a.m. Sunday, and includes areas of the Southwest Adirondacks, Upper Hudson Valley, and the Southern Green Mountains region.
According to the US National Weather Service Albany, light ice accretion is expected to develop as cold surface temperatures allow freezing rain to form on untreated roads, sidewalks, and elevated structures such as bridges and overpasses. Forecast ice totals range from 0.01 to 0.25 inches, with the greatest icing risk centered around Newcomb, Keene Valley, Schroon Lake, and nearby higher elevations.
Forecasters expanded the existing advisory to include southeast Warren County and northern Saratoga County, citing increasing confidence in freezing rain reaching farther south. Even minor glaze ice may lead to slick pavement and hazardous driving conditions, particularly this evening as temperatures drop.
The National Weather Service also warns of potential impacts beyond roadway icing. Falling branches and isolated powerline issues are possible where the heaviest ice develops, especially in wooded or elevated terrain. Residents traveling through areas such as Speculator, Warrensburg, Granville, Saratoga Springs, and Londonderry should use extreme caution.
Icing is expected to taper off overnight, with improving conditions toward daybreak Sunday. Temperatures will moderate Sunday afternoon, reducing the risk of additional freezing precipitation.
