Albany, New York – Light snow and dangerously cold temperatures are creating hazardous conditions across eastern New York this weekend, with wind chills reaching life-threatening levels.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Albany, light snow this morning has led to slippery travel conditions, but the more serious concern is the arrival of extreme cold behind an Arctic air mass. Wind chill values are expected to range from 20 to 35 degrees below zero through the weekend, creating a high risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

The coldest conditions are expected during overnight and early morning hours, particularly along major roadways including Interstate 90, Interstate 87, Interstate 88, and Interstate 787. Gusty winds will continue to enhance heat loss, making even short periods of outdoor exposure dangerous.

The National Weather Service warns that frostbite can develop on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes under these conditions. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and ensure all exposed skin is covered. Hats, gloves, and face protection are strongly recommended.

Officials also stress the importance of protecting pets during this extreme cold. Animals should be brought indoors whenever possible, as the cold poses a serious threat to their health and safety.

While snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, untreated roads and sidewalks may remain slick, especially during the morning and evening hours when temperatures are coldest. Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and be alert for icy patches.

The prolonged cold may strain heating systems and increase the risk of frozen pipes. Residents are encouraged to take preventive measures and check on vulnerable neighbors.

This cold snap may particularly affect early-morning commuters, outdoor workers, and those traveling long distances this weekend.

Residents should continue monitoring official National Weather Service updates as the extreme cold persists through Sunday.
