Albany, New York – Snow and freezing rain will overspread the Capital Region this morning and continue through tonight, bringing up to 10 inches north of I-90 and creating icy road conditions on I-87 and I-787 through 7 a.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, 6 to 10 inches of snow will fall across the Adirondacks and southern Vermont, with snowfall rates of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour at times. Areas south of I-90, including Albany, Catskill, and Poughkeepsie, are expected to see 1 to 4 inches of snow along with up to 0.25 inches of ice from freezing rain.
Road conditions will deteriorate quickly after midday.
The heaviest snow will focus north of I-90, including Glens Falls and Saratoga Springs, where the Northway (I-87) could become snow-covered by late afternoon. Farther south and east of the Hudson River, a mix of snow and ice may create slick secondary roads and hazardous bridge surfaces overnight into early Saturday.
Travel impacts are likely on the New York State Thruway (I-90), I-87, and Route 7 in Vermont, especially during the evening commute and overnight hours. Reduced visibility in heavier snow bands may drop below one-half mile.
Drivers should delay nonessential travel and check updated road conditions before heading out.
Precipitation tapers from southwest to northeast early Saturday morning, but lingering icy spots may persist through mid-morning as temperatures hover near freezing. Additional light snow showers are possible early next week. Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through tonight across eastern New York and western New England.
