Albany, New York — Falling temperatures today could turn wet roads icy across Albany as rain and snow transition to scattered snow showers.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, temperatures will drop steadily throughout the day, falling from the mid-30s this morning into the teens by late tonight. Periods of rain and snow early will change to scattered snow showers this afternoon into the evening as colder air moves in.

Forecasters said breezy conditions will develop this afternoon, increasing the risk that any remaining moisture on roads will freeze quickly once temperatures fall below freezing. The greatest icing concern is expected late afternoon through tonight, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Additional snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, generally around 1 to 2 inches, but even small accumulations combined with falling temperatures could create slick travel conditions.

The National Weather Service emphasized that the rapid temperature drop, rather than snowfall totals, is the primary hazard. Drivers may encounter changing road conditions with little warning as slush refreezes after sunset.

Residents are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution if traveling this evening or overnight.

This alert is especially relevant for evening commuters, students, and early-morning workers, as icy conditions may persist into Friday morning.
