Albany, New York – A significant, long-duration winter storm is expected to impact the Capital Region and eastern New York beginning Sunday, bringing heavy snow, dangerous travel conditions, and prolonged disruptions through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect as widespread snowfall totals of 12 to 18 inches are forecast across Albany and much of eastern New York. Isolated higher amounts of 18 to 24 inches are possible in the Eastern Catskills and Southern Green Mountains.
Snow is expected to begin Sunday morning and continue through Monday, with the most intense snowfall rates occurring Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. During that period, snowfall rates may exceed one inch per hour, significantly reducing visibility and making travel hazardous.
Forecasters warn that roads and sidewalks may remain snow-covered for extended periods due to the storm’s duration. The Monday morning commute is expected to be significantly impacted, with slick roads, low visibility, and continued light snow possible across the region.
Residents are urged to complete preparations ahead of Sunday, avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall, and plan for delays and disruptions into early next week. Conditions should gradually improve late Monday as snowfall tapers.
