HAINES, AK – A calm predawn sky gives way to steady flakes drifting in from the south, signaling the arrival of Alaska’s first true winter push in Haines. Roads and rooftops already show a light coating, and by sunrise, snow showers are expected to intensify as moisture deepens across the Lynn Canal region.

According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. AKST for Haines, Lutak, and Mud Bay. An additional 2 to 5 inches of snow is expected through this evening, with heavier bursts possible during the late morning. Visibility could drop below 4 miles at times, particularly near the Chilkat River Bridge and local mountain passes.

Travelers should anticipate slick conditions on the Haines Highway, with snow-packed surfaces and limited traction likely through the day. The heaviest snowfall rates — up to half an inch per hour — are expected through midday before tapering off late this afternoon.

Temperatures will hover in the upper 20s to low 30s, keeping snow light and dry — ideal for quick accumulation and reduced visibility.

Residents are urged to prepare for slower travel, allow extra time for commutes, and monitor road updates at 511.alaska.gov.
