Fairbanks, AK – Residents across Interior Alaska are being urged to prepare for hazardous travel as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 10 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Fairbanks.
The advisory covers the White Mountains, Upper Chena River Valley, and Chatanika River Valley, including stretches of the Steese, Elliott, and Dalton Highways. Forecasters said wet snow will continue through Friday, with 3 to 6 inches of accumulation expected in most areas.
According to the NWS, the strongest impacts will occur at higher elevations, where gusts up to 35 mph could reduce visibility and make driving difficult. Some peaks in the White Mountains have a 30% chance of seeing more than 6 inches, though road-level totals are expected to remain slightly lower.
Travelers should plan for slippery and snow-covered roads, particularly during the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes. Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra time, as icy conditions may develop on highways and side roads. Pedestrians are also advised to use caution, as sidewalks and driveways may be slick.
Road conditions across Alaska can be checked by calling 511, officials said.
This early-season snow is a reminder for Interior residents to prepare for longer winter travel times and take precautions when heading out.
