Juneau, AK – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 3 p.m. Sunday for Haines Borough and the Klukwan area, as heavy wet snow continues to impact travel along the Haines Highway.
According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, snowfall began late Saturday night and intensified overnight, with 3 to 5 inches already reported in Haines as of late Sunday morning. White Pass and higher elevations along the Klondike and Haines Highways are expected to receive up to 10 inches of snow, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph.
Forecasters say snow is expected to change to rain at lower elevations later this afternoon as warmer air moves into the region. However, travel remains difficult along the highways, where snow-covered roads and low visibility continue.
Officials advise travelers to avoid unnecessary driving and carry emergency supplies such as food, water, and flashlights. Property owners are also urged to prepare for additional winter weather as temperatures fluctuate.
