SKAGWAY, Alaska – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 1 a.m. Sunday as snow continues across the far northern Alaska Panhandle, with the heaviest accumulations near White Pass along the Klondike Highway. The National Weather Service in Juneau reports that up to 5 inches of new snow has fallen in higher elevations, accompanied by wind gusts up to 35 mph, creating reduced visibility and slick mountain roads.

According to forecasters, snow will gradually taper off overnight as the front weakens and moves east into Canada. The most significant impacts are expected along the White Pass summit, where drivers should expect snow-covered stretches and areas of blowing snow through early Sunday morning. Travel between Skagway and Fraser, B.C. may remain slow, especially for large vehicles or those without proper winter tires.

The NWS advises motorists to drive slowly, keep extra distance, and monitor 511.alaska.gov for updated road conditions. Residents are also encouraged to prepare for additional light snow or freezing drizzle Sunday morning before conditions improve.

Cool, dry weather will return early next week, with seasonal temperatures settling into the 30s.
