Fairbanks, Alaska – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 p.m. Tuesday through 10 a.m. Thursday for the Central Brooks Range, where 5 to 10 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 55 mph are expected to create dangerous travel conditions. The worst impacts are forecast along Atigun Pass and the Dalton Highway between mileposts 232 and 322, where blowing and drifting snow could reduce visibility to near one-half mile at times.
According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, snow will develop Tuesday evening and intensify overnight, accompanied by strong southerly winds through the mountain passes. Conditions will worsen into Wednesday morning, bringing slick roads, near-whiteout visibility, and difficult travel for truckers and long-haul drivers on the Dalton Highway.
Officials urge travelers to delay non-essential trips, check 511 for road conditions, and carry emergency supplies if driving through high terrain. Blowing snow may also cause tree damage and power interruptions where winds exceed 50 mph.
The combination of snow and wind will persist into Wednesday night before tapering off early Thursday. Temperatures will remain in the 20s across higher elevations, with wind chills dropping into the single digits.
This marks one of the season’s first significant winter systems for northern Alaska, signaling the transition to a colder, stormier pattern across the Brooks Range.
