ANCHORAGE, Alaska – With Thanksgiving travel nearing, Alaska transportation officials are reminding drivers to stay winter-ready as icy roads and subzero temperatures continue across the state. From Anchorage to Fairbanks, motorists are being urged to review vehicle safety and stock essential supplies before the long holiday drives and darker travel conditions later this month.
According to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, November is a key time to inspect tires, test batteries, and top off antifreeze. Even well-prepared drivers should carry a full emergency kit that includes blankets, high-visibility gear, a flashlight, jumper cables, bottled water, snacks, and traction aids such as sand or kitty litter.
Motorists traveling the Glenn, Parks, and Richardson Highways should prepare for low visibility, drifting snow, and extended distances between services. “Even short trips can turn risky in Alaska’s winter conditions,” an Alaska DOT spokesperson said. “A little preparation before Thanksgiving can make all the difference in a cold-weather emergency.” Drivers are also advised to keep at least three-quarters of a tank of fuel, pack extra clothing, and check 511.alaska.gov for real-time road, plow, and travel alerts.
With colder weather already setting in statewide, state officials emphasize that preparedness and caution remain critical for safe, reliable Thanksgiving travel throughout Alaska’s urban and remote routes.
