Skagway, AK – Drivers along the Klondike Highway should brace for challenging conditions tonight as a Winter Storm Watch goes into effect for the Skagway area and White Pass region.
According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a strong weather front will move through Alaska’s northern panhandle Wednesday evening, bringing moderate to heavy snowfall through Thursday afternoon.
Snow accumulation could reach up to 11 inches, particularly at elevations above 2,500 feet, including White Pass. The heaviest snowfall rates may approach one inch per hour at times, forecasters said.
By Thursday morning, temperatures are expected to warm slightly, lifting snow levels near the pass before dropping again later in the day. The shifting conditions could make travel treacherous, with limited visibility and slick roads likely.
Residents and travelers are urged to monitor the latest forecasts and plan for delays if crossing the Klondike Highway.
