Skagway, AK – Extremely dangerous cold is settling into northern Southeast Alaska today, with wind chills already plunging toward –35°F and expected to drop even further tonight across Skagway, White Pass, and higher elevations along the Klondike Highway.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Juneau, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, followed by an Extreme Cold Warning from 6 p.m. Monday to noon Tuesday. During the warning period, wind chills are forecast to fall as low as –40°F, creating life-threatening conditions for anyone exposed for even short periods.
NWS meteorologists note that the coldest conditions will occur at higher elevations, including White Pass, where wind chills were already near –30°F late Sunday night. Strong winds combined with an entrenched arctic air mass will continue driving temperatures downward through tonight.
The extreme cold may cause frostbite in minutes and poses a serious risk of hypothermia. Officials also warn that prolonged freezing temperatures could rupture outdoor water pipes, including sprinkler systems, exposed lines, and unprotected fixtures.
Residents are urged to take immediate precautions. Those who must be outdoors should wear full protective gear, including hats, facemasks, and heavy gloves or mittens. Homeowners should wrap or drain outdoor pipes or allow them to drip slowly to prevent freezing and bursts.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve Tuesday afternoon, though temperatures will remain well below seasonal averages.
