Bethel, AK – Western Alaska residents are bracing for dangerous winter weather today as a powerful system brings significant icing and blizzard conditions across the Kuskokwim Delta and Kuskokwim Valley through Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, an Ice Storm Warning remains in effect from 3 a.m. Tuesday to 9 a.m. Wednesday for communities including Bethel, Aniak, Crooked Creek, Akiachak, Kasigluk, and surrounding villages. Up to three-quarters of an inch of ice is expected, with travel likely becoming extremely hazardous.
Forecasters say a sharp precipitation line will develop near Bethel, dividing areas impacted by ice from areas receiving heavy snow. North and west of this line — including Nunivak Island and Nelson Island — blizzard conditions are likely, with 6 to 12 inches of snow and wind gusts between 35 and 45 mph reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less.
The National Weather Service warns that significant ice accumulation could lead to downed power lines, tree damage, and outages across affected communities. Roads, runways, and boardwalks are expected to become slick and dangerous throughout the storm period.
Travel is strongly discouraged during the event. Residents who must be on the road are urged to carry emergency supplies such as food, water, and a flashlight. Officials encourage households to prepare for possible power loss as icing increases Tuesday into early Wednesday.
