Alaska — Snow begins tapping rooftops and forest roads across the Panhandle today, but this is only the opening act. A much larger winter system is lining up offshore, poised to bring heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions as post-Christmas plans ramp up.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect today for parts of Southeast Alaska, including Prince of Wales Island, Western Kupreanof Island, and Kuiu Island. Snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected through this evening, with higher totals on elevated roads and exposed terrain. Travel may already feel slow and slick by late afternoon.

The bigger concern arrives Friday evening and lasts through Sunday morning, when a Winter Storm Watch takes over. Meteorologists are tracking a strong system pushing in from the southwest. Latest guidance shows many locations could see more than 12 inches of snow within 24 hours on Saturday, especially before warmer air begins changing snow to rain near the coast.

On Prince of Wales Island, snow ramps up quickly early Saturday. Four to six inches could fall in just six hours, especially during the early morning. Eastern sections may hold onto snow longer, with 8 to 12 inches possible before rain eventually takes over. Farther north, snow may persist into Sunday.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly. Snow-covered roads, slushy stretches, and poor visibility will make travel very difficult and strongly discouraged, especially during peak snowfall. Gusty winds could also bring down tree branches in exposed areas.

Plan ahead now. Secure property, delay unnecessary travel, and monitor updates closely. Check 511.alaska.gov for road conditions where available.

After snow tapers, heavy rain follows, adding runoff concerns into Sunday. Winter isn’t easing up yet. Conditions may change quickly, and additional advisories or warnings are possible as this system evolves.
