Petersburg, AK – Residents in Southeast Alaska are waking up to low visibility this morning as a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect for the Petersburg Borough through 9 a.m. AKST.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Juneau, dense fog settled into the region late Monday evening, creating visibility of a quarter-mile or less across the Petersburg area. Forecasters said the fog is expected to persist overnight, with only brief periods of improvement before sunrise Tuesday.

The advisory covers the city of Petersburg and surrounding communities in the borough. With temperatures near freezing in some spots, the combination of fog and low clouds could create difficult driving conditions on local roads, especially in low-lying and coastal areas.

NWS officials urge drivers to slow down, use headlights, and maintain extra distance from other vehicles while traveling early this morning. Ferry travelers and those moving between neighborhoods may also encounter patchy but dense areas of fog until later in the morning.

While the fog is expected to gradually lift by mid-morning, forecasters note that similar marine-influenced fog could return later this week as calm winds and moisture linger across Southeast Alaska.
