Skagway, AK – An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through 9 a.m. Friday for the Municipality of Skagway, where dangerously low wind chills near –50°F are gripping the region, especially across higher elevations near White Pass.
According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, White Pass has recorded wind chills around 50 below zero for much of Wednesday night, while the city of Skagway is experiencing readings between –15°F and –25°F. The extreme conditions are expected to continue into Friday morning as frigid Arctic air and strong winds persist.
Forecasters warn that frostbite and hypothermia can occur within minutes if precautions are not taken. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, wear multiple layers, and ensure hats, face coverings, and heavy gloves are worn if venturing outside.
Officials also caution that prolonged cold could cause water pipes to freeze and burst, urging homeowners to wrap or drain outdoor lines and let indoor faucets drip slowly to prevent damage.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Friday, but dangerously low wind chills may linger across exposed mountain passes.
