Fairbanks, AK – A fresh round of blowing snow is causing slippery travel conditions across the Fairbanks region overnight, with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 7 a.m. AKDT Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, the advisory covers the White Mountains, Upper Chena River Valley, and Chatanika River Valley. Impacted areas include Livengood, Circle Hot Springs, Chena Hot Springs Road east of milepost 34, and major stretches of the Steese, Elliott, and Dalton Highways.

Motorists should expect reduced visibility and slick roads, particularly along elevated routes such as Eagle Summit and Twelvemile Summit. Up to one inch of additional snow is expected before conditions improve Thursday morning.

Although daytime highs are forecast to reach the 40s through Sunday, overnight lows are expected to drop below freezing. This freeze-thaw cycle may result in black ice and deteriorating road conditions, especially during morning and evening commutes.

Travelers are urged to slow down and use caution, especially in higher elevations and shaded areas. Road conditions can be monitored via Alaska’s 511 system for real-time updates.

Residents are encouraged to keep emergency supplies in vehicles and plan accordingly for continued winter driving challenges through the weekend.
