Fairbanks, Alaska – Drivers along the Alaska Highway and Richardson Highway could face days of snow-covered pavement and visibility under one-half mile as wind-driven snow intensifies through Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. Wednesday for the Upper Tanana Valley, Delta Junction and the Eastern Alaska Range north of Trims Camp. Communities including Tok, Tanacross, Northway and Fort Greely can expect 4 to 7 inches of snow, with wind gusts up to 45 mph creating blowing snow.

Northwesterly winds will strengthen late Monday into Tuesday, increasing the risk of drifting snow along exposed stretches of the Richardson Highway between Mileposts 224 and 259 and the Alaska Highway east of Milepost 1392.

Farther north, including Fort Yukon, Eagle, Circle and portions of the Steese and Taylor highways, snow totals between 4 and 9 inches are expected through 3 a.m. Wednesday. The heaviest accumulation is likely south of the Yukon Flats and across parts of the Fortymile Country.

Travel may become difficult at times, especially in open areas where blowing snow reduces visibility. Motorists should carry winter survival gear and check 511.alaska.gov before departure. Snow and reduced visibility may persist into midweek before conditions gradually improve.
