Fairbanks, AK – Holiday travel across much of Alaska could be significantly impacted next week as forecasters warn of a widespread snow event capable of producing six inches or more of snowfall across large portions of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, a strong weather system is expected to impact Alaska beginning along the West Coast before spreading into the Interior between Sunday, December 22, and Thursday, December 26. Current forecast data shows high probabilities of at least six inches of snow, particularly across western Alaska and interior communities.

Probability maps highlight elevated snowfall chances near Kotzebue, Ambler, Hughes, Tanana, McGrath, and the Fairbanks area, where some locations show probabilities exceeding 70 percent for snowfall totals above six inches during the event.

Forecasters note that temperatures may briefly rise during the storm, potentially creating heavier, wetter snow in some areas. However, confidence is high that much colder air will return once the system exits, which could refreeze surfaces and worsen travel conditions.

The combination of accumulating snow, changing temperatures, and eventual colder air is expected to make road, runway, and river travel hazardous, especially for those traveling long distances for the holidays. Delays and disruptions are likely, particularly in rural areas where snow removal resources are limited.

Residents and travelers are urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and prepare emergency kits if traveling between communities. The National Weather Service recommends closely monitoring forecast updates as details on snowfall amounts and timing continue to be refined.
