Fairbanks, Alaska – Snow and gusty winds will begin impacting western Alaska within the next several hours as a storm system moves inland, bringing travel concerns through Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, snow will develop along the West Coast Thursday before spreading into the western Interior by early Friday morning. Accumulations are expected to reach up to 3 inches in many areas, with locally higher totals at elevated terrain.
Wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph along the West and Northwest Arctic coasts, creating blowing snow and reduced visibility, especially near coastal communities like Nome, Kotzebue, and Point Hope.
As temperatures rise later Thursday into Friday, some areas may see a transition to a rain-snow mix, which could create slushy and slick road conditions.
Travel across western Alaska could become hazardous at times, particularly during periods of stronger winds and snowfall.
Residents are urged to prepare for changing conditions, secure loose outdoor items, and monitor updates as the system moves inland through Friday evening.
