Sitka, Alaska – Snow is intensifying across parts of Southeast Alaska as a strengthening coastal storm begins pushing north through the panhandle, bringing several inches of accumulation and strong winds that could disrupt travel through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Sitka until 4 a.m. Sunday, followed by another advisory from 1 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday as a stronger front moves into the region. The system could produce 4 to 6 inches of snow in Sitka, with wind gusts up to 50 mph that may knock down tree branches and make roads difficult to navigate.
Across the central and northern Alaska Panhandle, a Winter Storm Warning signals heavier impacts. Areas near Elfin Cove and Pelican could receive 10 to 13 inches of snow from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon, with steady snowfall intensifying overnight.
Communities including Wrangell, Kake, and Port Alexander are expected to see 3 to 8 inches of snow from Sunday morning into early Monday, though some coastal areas could transition to rain later Sunday as temperatures climb into the upper 30s.
Further northwest, Yakutat remains under a Winter Weather Advisory until 2 p.m. Sunday with 3 to 6 inches of snow expected before conditions gradually improve.
Officials urge residents to prepare for difficult travel, secure outdoor property ahead of strong winds, and check 511.alaska.gov for the latest road conditions as the storm continues across the region into Monday.
