Anchorage, Alaska – Fierce winds up to 60 mph and up to 10 inches of snow will slam parts of the Aleutians, reducing visibility below one mile and making travel dangerous through the end of the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Central Aleutians, including Atka and Adak, from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 3 p.m. AKST Friday. Snow totals of 5 to 10 inches are expected, with west winds gusting to 60 mph. Periods of blowing snow will sharply reduce visibility, especially during heavier bursts.

Farther east, Unalaska, Dutch Harbor and Nikolski are under a Winter Weather Advisory from 11 p.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. AKST Saturday. Snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches are forecast, with gusts up to 50 mph creating drifting snow and near-whiteout conditions at times.

Rain will mix with snow at times in Atka before transitioning to all snow late Wednesday night. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects and create hazardous road and dock conditions.

Residents should secure loose items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind and snowfall periods. Additional advisories remain possible if conditions intensify.
