Fairbanks, Alaska – Snow is set to coat roads across Interior Alaska late Saturday into Sunday as the season’s first widespread accumulation reaches communities from Tok to Delta Junction and into the Fairbanks Metro area. Drivers should expect slick conditions on major routes, including the Parks, Richardson, Elliott, and Steese Highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, a front pushing moisture into cold air will bring light but steady snowfall through Sunday afternoon. The Fairbanks Bowl and Tanana Valley will see a half-inch to 1.5 inches of snow, while surrounding areas are forecast to pick up 1 to 3 inches. The White Mountains and Alaska Range could see 3 to 5 inches or more, with mountain passes turning especially treacherous.

Travelers on the Richardson Highway near Donnelly Dome and the Alaska Highway east of Tok should prepare for reduced visibility and icy patches. Crews may struggle to keep up with accumulating snow in higher terrain. Residents are urged to allow extra travel time, keep emergency kits in vehicles, and avoid unnecessary driving overnight.

Light snow is expected to taper by late Sunday, but temperatures will remain cold enough to keep roads icy into early next week. Additional advisories are possible if another system develops midweek.
