Juneau, Alaska – Heavy snow and hazardous travel conditions continue across much of the Alaska Panhandle this weekend as a prolonged winter storm impacts the region through Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect across large portions of Southeast Alaska, including Juneau, Yakutat, Skagway, Haines, Klukwan, Glacier Bay, and Hyder. Snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour have been observed in parts of the northern Panhandle, including the Juneau and Icy Strait corridor.

In the Municipality of Skagway and Haines Borough, additional snow accumulations of 16 to 28 inches are expected through 6 a.m. AKST Monday, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph in Skagway. Yakutat could see 17 to 26 inches of snow by early Monday, while Hyder may receive 8 to 13 inches through Sunday night.

The City and Borough of Juneau and Glacier Bay are forecast to receive 3 to 7 inches, with localized totals exceeding 8 inches in areas north of Auke Bay. Forecasters warn that a shifting rain-snow line could bring periods of freezing rain, especially in downtown Juneau and Gustavus, creating highly variable conditions across short distances.

Travel is expected to be very difficult and not advised in many areas due to blowing snow, rapidly changing precipitation types, and heavy, wet snow placing stress on infrastructure. Hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute, and additional snow may persist into Monday.

Residents are urged to limit travel, prepare emergency supplies, and monitor forecast updates closely. Road conditions, where available, can be checked at 511.alaska.gov.
