Fairbanks, Alaska – A winter storm impacting the Alaska Interior is expected to bring several inches of snow through Sunday night, prompting the National Weather Service to expand winter weather advisories to include the Fairbanks North Star Borough.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Fairbanks, snowfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected across the Fairbanks area beginning tonight and continuing through Sunday night. A brief break in snowfall is possible Saturday evening before snow resumes. Breezy conditions in valley locations may contribute to reduced visibility at times.

Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect across much of the Interior. In the eastern Alaska Range mountains, east winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected through late Saturday night. These winds may cause blowing and drifting snow, leading to significantly reduced visibility, especially in higher elevations and mountain passes.

Near Delta Junction, snowfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are possible through Sunday night. Winds are expected to diminish Saturday night, which may reduce blowing snow concerns in that area.

Special Weather Statements remain in effect for portions of the Upper Koyukuk Valley, Central Interior, Flats, Forty Mile Country, Upper Tanana Valley, Upper Chena River Valley, and the Eielson Air Force Base and Salcha–Two Rivers areas. Snowfall totals between 2 and 5 inches are expected by Sunday night in these locations, with periods of heavier snow and low visibility possible, particularly tonight.

The National Weather Service cautioned that travel conditions may become hazardous due to accumulating snow and blowing snow, especially on highways, rural roads, and through mountain passes. Drivers are encouraged to monitor road conditions and allow extra travel time.

Residents across the Interior are urged to stay updated on the latest forecasts and advisories as the storm continues through the weekend.
